Honeymoon – Where to go?

Almost a year ago I made a very important decision. With the sun rising over the mountains across from Reykjavik harbour, I asked my long suffering girlfriend to become my wife… luckily she said yes. It has taken a lot of planning but we have finally booked our wedding for June 2019. Very exciting!

Wedding Venue

It will be a very small affair. Just close friends and family set in a lovely country house near where we live. Ticks all the boxes really. Beautiful surroundings, great food (high priority of course) and a bar that lets me choose what beer I want on tap… what more could I ask for?

While I’m assured wedding planning will be stressful, I am now interested in planning a slightly different event… the Honeymoon! Planning a holiday is one of my favourite things and so I am really excited to decide on a once in a lifetime adventure to celebrate our marriage.

This is where you guys come in. We have an extensive bucket list for travelling, but I thought it would be great to get suggestions from everyone on places to go and things to do. Hopefully find something I never even considered before.

Here is a little direction for you. Our perfect holiday is spent exploring the country (usually hiring a car), lots of walking and lots of good food. We’ve got to do something with all those burnt calories right? We aren’t really beach resort people. Within 5 minutes I am a lobster and scuttle across the sand trying to find some shade. Not a pretty sight I can assure you.

If you have spent any time on the blog you will know I love learning languages. It is my hobby and passion. So the honeymoon would be a great excuse to add another one to my linguistic toolbelt… a language for every occasion (yes, like batman). I am the polyglot this blog needs…. Sorry, where was I?

We haven’t really gone into full planning mode, but here are some of the top picks from our current bucket list:

Italy

There is a very special place in my heart for Italia. It is where I found my love for languages and travel after I planned a surprise trip to Rome for my fiancèe’s birthday. We loved it so much we even went to Venice in the same year. Four years on and we haven’t been lucky enough to return, so it would be great to have an extended break and explore the whole country, rather than just one city. Tuscany, Cinque Terre, Puglia and on to Sicily is one idea I had. We even found out that you can rent a Dolomite house in Alberobello with Air BnB… very tempting!

Japan

I have had an obsession for Manga, Anime and Japanese food for a long time, so it would be great to head there and experience it in person. Enjoying sushi in Tokyo, ramen on the road, amazing takoyaki at a temple and a Geisha tea ceremony. It’s the stuff dreams are made of… well mine at least. Food aside, the country itself is beautiful and would be completely different to anywhere we have been before. Reading manga in the original Japanese is also on my language bucket list so would be the perfect chance to check it off.

Iceland 2016Scandinavia

Since our Icelandic adventure, we have often talked about exploring Scandinavia. Road trip around the fjords and the countryside in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the elusive northern lights this time. As well as having jaw dropping scenery the food is also meant to be spectacular… which will obviously be a strong factor in the final decision. The main attraction for this trip would undoubtedly be staying in the Ice Hotel and the glass igloos in the forest, laying in bed staring at the stars. Truly unforgettable!

America

This one is a little different than the rest. With no chance of a new language to learn the whole focus would be on food… it’s a hard job but someone has to do it, right? Jewish Deli in New York, Cheesesteak in Philadelphia, BBQ in Texas and Creole cuisine in New Orleans. My mouth is watering just talking about it. If Man vs Food has taught me anything (other than the fact that I have an enormous appetite) is that everywhere you go in America there will be some amazing food to try. After months of wedding dieting to fit in a suit this will be the perfect treat… so I can put it all back on!

What do you guys think, where should we go to have a once in a lifetime adventure we will never forget? I am excited to see what you come up with in the comments below.

I will keep you all updated on wedding and honeymoon plans as they progress so stay tuned.

Ciao for now!
